Bennett announces his intention to run for ASA Board

Mike Bennett from Bennett Land and Cattle in Ducor, CA announced his intention to run for American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors.

I formally submitted my intention to run for the board of directors of the American Shorthorn Association to Dr. Bert Moore on October 27, 2009.

Our family has been involved in the cattle business for over 130 years. Our ranch was homesteaded in the mid-1800s.  The commercial herd was based on the Hereford breed and over the last 30 years we have used crossbreeding, and the advantages of heterosis, to improve our efficiency and performance.  Angus and Shorthorn now play a vital part in our operation.

Our daughter, Brooke, played a large part in our becoming involved in the Shorthorn breed as she was very successful in the show ring and at the representing the breed nationally as the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen.  Marti, my wife, just finished serving as president of the National Lassies Board.  My involvement in the cattle industry includes holding county and state offices within the California Cattlemen’s Association, as well as working at the national level for NCBA.  At the state level I served as second vice president from 1996 to 1998 and also served as chairman of several committees.  My latest involvement has been with the California Rangeland Trust which is the largest land trust in California.  Some of our projects have been the preservation of the Hearst Ranch and the Orvis Ranch.  The mission of the trust is to conserve the open space, natural habitat and stewardship provided by California ranches.  I was fortunate to serve as chairman for three years.

As you can see, our family is steeped in the tradition and heritage of the cattle business and want to preserve and improve this business.  The Shorthorn breed offers tremendous opportunities and possibilities to make the cattle industry more profitable and efficient and we are committed to that goal.  A strong membership and involvement is critical in realizing these goals.

One must be involved in all facets of the business which includes the political arena and association business in order to push an agenda which represents all parts of the membership. This is my primary reason for seeking this position.

2009 Annual Meeting Highlights: Gipe to run for ASA Board and more...

The Annual Meeting for 2009 was once again held in Plymouth, CA at the Spotlight on Quality Show and Sale.  It was a night of fun and business.

Diana Cardey led the group in prayer after the heartfelt welcome by President Gary Witte.  Dinner was served on time and the food was great. Jason Yoacham and his team sure know how to feed a hungry mob.

President Witte then announced that Alpha Gipe was going to be running for the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, CO.  Good luck Alpha.

Elections were held for the CSBA Board of Directors.  The terms of Don Cardey, Greg Cardey, Gary Witte and Gary Rose had expired.  Don decided not to run this year and the Nomination Committee recommended Tim Whitfield to take his place.  After all votes were tallied, Whitfield and the three incumbents were elected to the Board of Directors.  They join Alpha Gipe, Hugh Mooney, Frank Bigelow, Matt Bigelow, Cruz Valdez, Chad Noble, Dennis Pluth and Kris Gudel as the 2010 Board of Directors.

The dessert auction went rather well.  Auctioneer Jim Clark did a wonderful job of soliciting those bids for the juniors.  The highlight of the night was the Mud pie made by LaVern Albaugh.

The silent auction/live auction sign for the CSBA netted us over $1,000.00.  Highlights of the CSBA items were the custom ranch sign  that went to Walt Baxter of Snelling and the Website Design and Hosting for one year that ended up going to Bigelow Farms.
